In recent days, cases of "human metapneumovirus" (HMPV) have appeared in many countries, and Hong Kong has also seen several infections in the past two weeks. On the evening of the 7th,黎諾懿 stated that his son, 峰峰 (小春雞), had unfortunately contracted the virus, resulting in a high fever and pneumonia. Paediatrician Dr. Chan Yan-wing also shared information about the virus, including how to identify symptoms and preventive measures.

Yesterday evening (6th), Lawrence Ng posted on social media that his son, Feng Feng, has unfortunately contracted Human Metapneumovirus recently. The viral infection has caused Feng Feng to have a persistent high fever and pneumonia, which is a worrying situation. Lawrence Ng also urged all parents to pay close attention to their children and seek medical advice as soon as possible if they show symptoms such as coughing, colds, or fever.
Meanwhile, Li Jieying, wife of Lai Nok-yi, also shared on her IG story to let everyone know they are safe, posting a video of Fung Fung being hospitalised. He appears to be in good spirits. She also mentioned that Fung Fung still has a fever, but is not as uncomfortable as before.
Children most susceptible to infection, symptoms similar to RSV virus
According to the Centre for Health Protection website, human metapneumovirus is a single-stranded RNA virus, first discovered in 2001. Dr Chan Yan Wing, a paediatrician, stated that human metapneumovirus is a common respiratory infectious virus, with an incubation period typically ranging from 3 to 6 days. It is highly contagious, and children are most susceptible to infection.
He also stated that human metapneumovirus (HMPV) shares similar symptoms with common respiratory viruses like RSV, including cough, phlegm, and runny nose, as well as fever.
Furthermore, the virus can spread through droplets and affect gastrointestinal health, leading to symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea in some patients. Infection with human metapneumovirus can also cause bronchitis and pneumonia, and in children, it can lead to middle ear infections.
No targeted treatment, personal hygiene needs to be maintained.
Dr Chan stated that there are currently no specific treatments for human metapneumovirus, and only supportive care can be provided to alleviate symptoms. He reminded parents to ensure their children pay attention to personal hygiene, wash their hands frequently, cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and wash their hands; they should also maintain good lifestyle habits, such as getting enough rest.
He also reminded parents that children in Hong Kong have been infected with various viruses in recent months, such as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenza virus, and influenza A, and that emphasis must be placed on personal hygiene.
