Child behaviour and psychotherapy

It is not uncommon for children to experience mental health issues and negative emotions when under stress. If these psychological and emotional problems are not properly addressed through counselling, they can develop into serious behavioural problems in children. The causes of problem behaviour are often multifaceted. If necessary, paediatric specialists can provide consultations and referrals to the 'Hui Er' Child Mental Health and Development Assessment Centre to arrange treatment plans and counselling that are suitable for each child's condition.

The centre provides clinical and educational psychology services for children, assessment and counselling for learning and behaviour, diagnosis and treatment for children’s emotional and behavioural problems, treatment for childhood anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, etc., and assessment for autism or social communication disorders.

Parental psychological counseling and guidance on disciplinary techniques

There are many multifaceted causes of children's emotional problems, primarily including: Child factors (personality traits, physiological characteristics, developmental abilities), Parental factors (parents' own personality maturity, parents' physiological characteristics and health status, parents' psychological and behavioural problems, parenting skills, marital and family problems, economic and housing issues), Parent-child interaction factors (adversarial parent-child interaction patterns, bully-type parent-child interaction patterns), Family stress and family member interaction factors (positive functions of the child's problematic behaviour, parental emotional stress leading to inappropriate discipline, parental over-anxiety and excessively high expectations for the child, the child's own emotional stress).

It is worth noting that the direction of influence is not always a single one, with each factor interacting with others. To gain a deeper understanding of a child's situation, it is recommended to arrange for a child emotional assessment as soon as possible to take advantage of the optimal period for educational and child psychologists to provide child emotional therapy and child emotional counselling.

Child Behavioural Assessment and Therapy

Identifying the true motivation behind children's behavioural problems is key to addressing them. Dr. Chou Yu-ju, a researcher at National Central University's Reading Research Lab and a specialist in child development, points out that when children misbehave, parents should first ask "why" instead of "what to do." Different motivations and reasons require different approaches. If parents merely suppress a child's outward behaviour without exploring the underlying reasons, it's like taking painkillers – it only temporarily alleviates the surface pain, and the child will repeat the same behaviour or express themselves in different ways next time.

Child behaviour assessments are one way to help parents gain a deeper understanding of their child's behaviour, so that children in need can receive appropriate child behaviour therapy to improve their situation. Doctors will understand the family's daily communication and interaction patterns by meeting with parents and children. Based on the child behaviour problems and the results of the child behaviour assessment, children's behaviour therapy recommendations will be provided.

Child psychology counselling

The aim of child psychological counselling is to help children reduce stress, develop appropriate coping skills, and improve their overall development. The content is tailored to individual needs and can focus on various issues, including: learning or family stress, anxiety symptoms (e.g., social anxiety, selective mutism, panic disorder, etc.), depression or low mood, anger management and emotional regulation issues.Autism characteristicsSocial problems.

What is the counselling process like?

Family counselling: Book an appointment to meet with our child psychologist to understand your child's psychological condition and your family's concerns. Then, discuss with parents to determine counselling goals, duration, and an approximate number of sessions required.

One-to-one regular counselling: A child psychologist will meet with the child regularly on a one-to-one basis to work through the issues raised. Depending on the situation, staff may invite parents or primary caregivers to attend some of these sessions.

Review Meetings: Parents can regularly review counselling progress with a child psychologist. In the meeting, the child psychologist will understand parental concerns and discuss counselling progress with them. If necessary, the child psychologist will also discuss adjusting counselling goals and directions with parents.
