The Importance of Parental Consistency | Dr. Lam Ka-yi

EvenChildren with autismWhile a child's own willingness to engage in behavioural training and their ability to absorb information are important, the role of parents is actually more crucial. Just imagine, if parents constantly have differing opinions on the training, how can a child adapt?

I once worked with a three-year-old girl, Wenwen (pseudonym), who had been receiving training since K1. After two years of therapy, her repetitive behaviours and communication skills gradually improved. Looking back at the entire training process, we found that Wenwen's mother participated every time and had a very good understanding of the child's progress, knowing when to intervene appropriately and demonstrating a very positive attitude. Furthermore, Wenwen's parents never contradicted each other; once they agreed on a direction, they committed to it wholeheartedly. It is crucial for parents to understand that every argument can make a child feel distressed and unsure, and any negative emotions can hinder training progress!
