The difference between flu and the common cold

Hong Kong has entered the peak season for winter flu, and at the same time, there is a constant stream of people suffering from colds. Furthermore, some citizens still do not fully understand the difference between a cold and influenza (flu).

A common cold refers to a general upper respiratory tract infection. Over 100 types of viruses can cause cold symptoms. When sufferers sneeze or cough, droplets spread the virus through the air, or touching contaminated objects with your fingers, such as shaking hands or touching doorknobs, can also lead to cold infection. The main symptoms of a cold include a stuffy nose, runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, and cough. With careful nursing, most colds will clear up on their own.

As for influenza, its mode of transmission and symptoms are similar to those of the common cold. Influenza viruses can be broadly classified into types A, B, and C. However, the symptoms of influenza are more severe than those of a cold, such as high fever (over 38.5℃), chills, muscle aches, and extreme fatigue. Influenza poses a certain risk, especially to vulnerable or immunocompromised individuals, such as children, the elderly, and patients with chronic diseases, and can lead to various serious complications.

The best way to deal with seasonal flu at present is to get vaccinated early; especially those with lower immunity such as children, the elderly, and chronic disease patients with conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure should get vaccinated. After vaccination, it takes approximately 2 to 3 weeks for immunity to reach its peak, so it is advisable to get vaccinated in advance.
