[Back to School 2022] Returning to School Easily Has Infectious Diseases, Also Afraid of Contracting COVID-19, Paediatrician Recommends Doing These 4 Things

School starts tomorrow (1st), and students will still need to wear masks in the new academic year, as well as maintain half-day classes. Paediatricians remind people that besides being cautious about contracting COVID-19, there has also been an increase in gastroenteritis cases recently. They advise that even when wearing masks during class, one should pay attention to hygiene at all times.

With the number of confirmed cases continuing to rise, and children returning to school for the new academic year, many parents are worried about their children's health. Paediatrician Dr Chan Yan-wing reminds them that to prevent infection, it's essential to start with oneself, ensuring sufficient sleep, a balanced diet, and maintaining good physical condition. "Schools are group settings, making them prone to infection. Although rapid tests are conducted daily, cases can still slip through the net. Parents should remind children to be careful when removing their masks to eat, and to wash their hands before and after removing and putting on masks. Parents should prepare hand sanitiser and teach children to handle masks carefully, not to pull them down to their chins." Dr Chan reminds them: "Wearing a mask is not a foolproof solution, as some children rub their eyes or handle their masks improperly, which can lead to infection."

Paediatricians recommend doing 4 things

Dr. Chan stated that children wearing masks has reduced the spread of diseases. Previously, June to September was the peak season for hand, foot and mouth disease, while September to October was the season for flu and respiratory infections. Recently, there has been an increase in cases with gastrointestinal symptoms. To avoid infection, social gatherings should be reduced, parents should prepare enough masks for their children, and they should wash their hands frequently, avoid rubbing their eyes and touching their noses. Those who are unwell should avoid going to school.
