Overview
Iron supplements are used to treat and prevent iron deficiency anaemia. They are essential for replenishing iron stores in the body to support red blood cell production.

Mechanism of Action
Iron is a critical component of haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. Supplementation restores normal haemoglobin levels.

Dosage and Administration
The dosage depends on the specific formulation (e.g., ferrous sulphate, ferrous fumarate). It is best absorbed on an empty stomach, but taking it with food can help minimise gastrointestinal side effects. Vitamin C enhances absorption.

Side Effects
Common side effects include constipation, dark stools, nausea, and abdominal pain.

Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with iron overload disorders (e.g. haemochromatosis), haemolytic anaemia, or known hypersensitivity to the supplement.
