A significant concern for them is the impact on their appearance, as adolescents are particularly sensitive to how others perceive them, which can lead to psychological distress. Paediatrician Dr. Wu Chun-Ban is here to explain eczema and how parents can not only comfort their teenagers but also improve their condition with two main therapies.

Academic pressure during the study period can easily trigger eczema.

Dr. Hu has treated many adolescent eczema patients, whose eczema is triggered by academic stress. The intense itching from eczema flare-ups often prevents them from sleeping at night, leading to poor sleep quality and a very bad mental state. They also often can't resist scratching, which breaks the skin. The more the skin is irritated, the more inflammatory factors are secreted from the eczematous lesions, only causing the patient to scratch more, creating a vicious cycle that can gradually develop into moderate to severe eczema.

For teenagers who are image-conscious, it has a significant psychological and physiological impact. Many teenagers suffer from depression and anxiety as a result. Parents can spend more time with teenagers at this time, listen to their worries, or encourage them to participate in more social activities! It is essential not to let them face this alone. Dr. Hu pointed out that the most important solution is to treat eczema fundamentally, as most of the teenagers' psychological problems are caused by eczema.

Two major therapies show significant effectiveness for eczema

1. IgE allergy test

Allergic symptoms in the human body are primarily caused by inflammatory reactions of the human immune system to specific substances. When the immune system encounters an allergen, it produces immunoglobulin E (IgE) against that allergen. When cells are stimulated by IgE, they release hormones such as histamine and prostaglandins, triggering a series of allergic reactions, such as eczema. In severe cases, airway swelling can lead to breathing difficulties, or a sudden drop in blood pressure can cause shock, which can be fatal once it occurs.

Allergy testing can detect over 90% allergens; skin and blood tests are carried out on children with severe eczema to identify the allergens causing their condition. This enables targeted treatment and can effectively alleviate the symptoms of eczema.

Sometimes, by identifying one or two primary allergens in young children, allergen immunotherapy vaccines can be prepared based on the patient's allergy test results. Regular administration will lead to an immune tolerance response. As the patient's sensitivity to allergens gradually decreases, their symptoms also improve. For example, if some children have particularly high antibody levels to dust mites, desensitisation treatment will focus more on dust mites, which can significantly improve their skin problems.

2. Wet-Wrap Wet Dressing Therapy

Wet wrapping can seal moisturising ingredients and medication onto the affected area. At the same time, it can reduce skin moisture loss, block external irritants, and aid medication absorption. Dr Wu states that this treatment method can usually significantly improve eczema within a few days.

Step

Apply moisturising cream to the affected area after a bath.
2. Cover with a damp gauze and cling film.
3. Wear long-sleeved clothing overnight
4. Can be removed the following morning
5. Reapply moisturiser

Please note:
Cling film should not be wrapped too tightly as it can damage blood vessels.
It's normal to experience bodily secretions and body odour after being wrapped tightly in cling film all night.

[68
post-8639","parenting_info","type-parenting_info","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-eczema
["GET
