However, a paediatrician points out that what children really need is interaction with their parents, and that protecting their intellectual development requires paying attention to preventing infectious diseases that can affect the brain. "From a doctor's perspective, childhood is indeed a golden period for brain development, and if this period is used for appropriate training, intelligence can be enhanced. However, the method is not to cram knowledge into a child's brain. For example, flashcards for recognising words may seem to allow children to recognise words earlier, but the result is merely that children learn a few English words sooner, which does not significantly help overall brain development." Dr. Ivan Chan, a paediatric specialist, says that what children really need is interaction with their parents. "Because all of us initially learn through imitation, close contact with parents, such as talking and playing, can develop a child's language ability, imagination, and so on."

"Some parents often leave the education of their children to domestic helpers, or let their children play alone with tablet computers and English learning tools, which doesn't help their brain development much!" He pointed out that to promote children's brain development, children should be encouraged to try new things in various ways, be exposed to all sorts of things in the world, and be provided with quality parent-child time. Static activities can include parents reading stories to their children, role-playing, singing, and so on, while dynamic activities can include taking children outdoors to look at plants and animals, running, playing football, and so on, allowing children to experience and explore various things, thereby discovering their personal interests and talents, and achieving holistic development.

Regarding nutrition, people often ask whether children should be given DHA supplements or specially chosen milk powder containing DHA. Dr. Chan stated: "I don't object to taking relevant supplements, as they have no side effects after all. However, breastfed children are the smartest. Instead of worrying about supplements, it's better to breastfeed your child!" It is noteworthy that parents go to great lengths to enhance their children's intelligence, yet they overlook certain illnesses that can affect a child's intelligence, such as meningitis and encephalitis. In the past, elders often said that children's brains could be "burnt out" by fever. In fact, fever does not "burn out" the brain; the illnesses they were referring to should be meningitis and encephalitis. This is because both can cause high fever and brain damage, leading to intellectual problems.

"Meningitis and encephalitis can cause permanent intellectual damage, and may also lead to learning difficulties, hearing and vision impairment, cognitive decline, personality changes, and epilepsy. Since brain cells cannot regenerate once damaged, these problems are permanent," said Dr. Chan. Meningococcal meningitis is generally spread through contact with a patient's oral or nasal secretions, and is more easily transmitted in crowded places like schools. Japanese encephalitis is spread by mosquitoes, and outbreaks are more common in places such as Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea, where children have been fully vaccinated by the government. In their early stages, these diseases are very similar to the common cold, and by the time they are detected, they have often already affected the brain, which is a great pity. Vaccines for Haemophilus influenzae type b, meningococcal disease, and Japanese encephalitis can all prevent different forms of encephalitis and meningitis, but as they are not included in the government's..."<a href="https://www.primecare.com.hk/en/vaccinations/" target="_blank" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.primecare.com.hk/vaccinations/" rel="noreferrer
