The development of any secondary sexual characteristics in girls before the age of 8, and in boys before the age of 9, may indicate precocious puberty. Studies have suggested that individuals with precocious puberty have a higher chance of developing breast cancer and endometrial hyperplasia later in life compared to the general population. Dr. Tsui Tsz Kwan, a paediatric specialist in Hong Kong, stated in an interview that there are numerous causes of precocious puberty. In one case, a 5-year-old girl sought medical attention due to pain and swelling in one breast. After numerous examinations, her physical condition was found to be normal. It was later discovered that environmental factors might have been the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is precocious puberty? Dr. Xu Ziyun states that when children enter puberty, the level of developmental hormones increases, leading to a series of physical and psychological changes. Precocious puberty is defined as the appearance of puberty and secondary sexual characteristics earlier than the normal average age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Generally speaking, the normal age for boys to develop is between 9 and 14 years old, and for girls, it's between 8 and 13 years old. The first observable symptom in girls is breast development, which can occur on one or both sides and may be accompanied by swelling and discomfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Xu recalled a case of a girl, just over five years old, who came for consultation due to pain and swelling in one breast for over a month. Examination revealed breast tissue, which appeared to be a sign of precocious breast development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, after the young girl underwent blood tests and X-rays, all results came back normal. Dr. Xu continued to speak with the parents and discovered that the girl might have been affected by environmental factors \u2013 it turned out the family used a lot of plastic containers and toys, and also had a habit of using aromatherapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After learning about the child's lifestyle habits, the parents began to make further adjustments, including reducing snack intake, changing to healthier foods, and using fewer plastic products and essential oil aromatherapy. Three months later, when the girl was re-examined, her unilateral breast had shrunk by nearly two-thirds. Dr. Xu estimated that the girl had unilateral premature thelarche, which was highly likely to be caused by environmental factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Brain tumours and genetic mutations can cause precocious puberty<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many causes of precocious puberty. Dr. Xu explains that medically, precocious puberty is divided into \"central precocious puberty\" and \"peripheral precocious puberty.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Central precocious puberty involves the pituitary gland secreting developmental hormones early, which in turn stimulates the gonads, including the testes and ovaries, to release oestrogen and testosterone, leading to the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics in children. Generally, this condition is more common in girls, with nearly 80-90% of girls experiencing idiopathic precocious puberty, meaning there's no specific identifiable cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In contrast, most boys have pathological factors, including brain tumours, serious brain diseases, or past inflammation or genetic mutations, that lead to precocious puberty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regarding \"peripheral precocious puberty\", it is about peripheral organs prematurely releasing male or female hormones, and cortisol, for unknown reasons, leading to precocious puberty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The underlying cause could be related to endocrine problems such as hypothyroidism, adrenal gland issues, or even ovarian or testicular disorders, or cysts and tumours, and is generally unrelated to pituitary growth hormone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Xu stated that apart from pathological factors such as cysts or tumours, environmental, genetic, and dietary factors can also be potential triggers for precocious puberty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Xu stated that for children to develop normally, a balanced diet is essential. Parents selecting food should be mindful of avoiding excessive processed foods or snacks for their children, opting instead for foods that are hormone-free and certified. In addition, adequate sleep and appropriate exercise can aid in a child's normal development. If a child experiences precocious puberty, they should seek medical attention as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Media Link:
