Dr. Xu Jie, a paediatrician, points out that flat feet in children generally return to normal as their feet mature, but if the child experiences pain, has an abnormal gait due to flat feet, or if the flat feet persist beyond puberty, medical help should be sought.

It is normal for the arch of the foot to disappear when an infant or toddler stands.

Dr. Xu pointed out that the arch of the foot in infants and young children may appear to disappear or flatten when they stand, which can be considered normal to some extent: "This is because the foot structure of infants and young children undergoes changes during the developmental process. The phalanges and joints gradually ossify and develop, while the muscles and ligaments of the arch also gradually develop and strengthen."

Typically, children's arches begin to form around the age of three to four and gradually develop fully between the ages of six and ten. Therefore, during this developmental period, the appearance of the feet may change, including the arches looking flat or disappearing.

When infants and toddlers are standing, their arches may appear to disappear or flatten, which can be considered normal to some extent.

Flexible flat feet improve on their own during development.

Most cases of flat feet in children are flexible flat feet, where the arch collapses or disappears when bearing weight, but the arch can be restored when not bearing weight.
Generally, flexible flat feet may improve on their own during a child's growth and development. As the muscles, ligaments, and bones mature, the arch of the foot may gradually form. Most children develop a full arch around puberty, typically between the ages of 10 and 16. However, this timeframe is a rough guide, and the actual situation can vary depending on individual growth rates and physical characteristics.

Most children's arches develop fully around puberty, typically between the ages of 10 and 16.

Dr. Xu also pointed out: "If a child still has flexible flat feet after puberty, or if foot symptoms persist, parents are advised to seek an assessment from a medical professional." After further evaluation of the child's foot condition, medical professionals can provide appropriate treatment recommendations, such as specially designed insoles, arch support, or physiotherapy, to help improve foot structure and function.

When parents address their child's flat feet, they should be aware that each child's foot development is unique. The most reliable approach is to seek professional medical advice. Mishandling the situation with unverified methods circulating in the community may lead to the condition worsening.

Special insoles to relieve pain caused by flat feet

Many parents also have questions, even if their child's flat feet are not problematic, can wearing insoles help foot development? Dr. Xu believes that whether insoles are needed depends on individual circumstances and the severity of the symptoms, and cannot be generalised: "Insoles are a common non-surgical treatment method that can provide arch support and stability, reducing foot pain and discomfort."

If a child has flexible flat feet but no obvious foot symptoms, special insoles may not be necessary. In this situation, the choice of footwear is crucial for providing foot support and comfort. Dr. Xu advises parents to choose shoes with arch support and a good fit for their children to ensure the feet are properly positioned and stable.

However, if flexible flat feet cause foot pain, difficulty walking, or affect daily activities, a medical professional may recommend the use of special insoles or arch supports. These insoles can be custom-made or standard-sized support insoles chosen according to foot structure and needs, providing additional arch support, reducing foot pressure, and improving gait and posture.

If flexible flat feet cause foot pain, difficulty walking, or affect daily activities, medical professionals may recommend the use of special insoles or arch supports.

Pain, abnormal gait or requiring treatment

Although most cases of flat feet in children are a normal part of their growth, parents shouldn't become complacent.
