Newborn babies need a series of vaccinations, including the government-provided "Quadruple" mixed vaccine and the self-funded "Quintuple" mixed vaccine. But what's the difference between them? Paediatrician Dr. Chan Yan-wing answers for you!

Quadrivalent vaccine 和 What's the difference in the 6-in-1 vaccine?

The '4-in-1' is a combination vaccine that includes diphtheria, tetanus, inactivated polio and acellular pertussis. It is part of the Department of Health's "Hong Kong Childhood Immunisation Programme", so children can receive it for free at Maternal and Child Health Centres, providing basic preventative effects for children from birth to Primary 6.

The "six-in-one" vaccine contains the four vaccines found in the four-in-one vaccine, plus the Hepatitis B vaccine and the Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine (Hib), to provide further protection. The six-in-one vaccine is only available on the private market, and parents will need to pay for their children to receive it.

The Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine, which is part of the 'six-in-one' vaccine, is not included in the government's subsidy scheme. Dr. Chan reminds parents to be aware of the impact of Hib on infants and young children. "Because it is a serious invasive bacterium, it particularly affects infants and young children under the age of 5. If infected, it can lead to problems such as meningitis, invasive pneumonia, septicaemia, otitis media, and acute epiglottitis, and in severe cases, even death."

To prevent Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), vaccination is the most effective method. The Hib vaccine is highly effective and is recommended for infants as part of their routine immunisation schedule. It is usually given in a series of shots at specific ages.

The World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advocate for Hib prevention in infants and young children. Currently, countries such as the UK, US, Canada and Australia have included Hib in their vaccination programmes to provide comprehensive protection for infants and young children. In addition to vaccination, Dr. Chan reminds parents to teach their children to cultivate good personal and environmental hygiene, such as washing hands frequently and covering their mouth and nose with their hand when sneezing.

Choose according to personal needsChoosing suitable vaccines for young children

The Hexavalent vaccine includes the benefits of the Quadrivalent vaccine, with the added protection of the Hepatitis B vaccine and Hib, and is administered at the same time. Therefore, if parents choose to pay for the Hexavalent vaccine, they can save themselves taking their child to the clinic for the Quadrivalent vaccine.

Choosing the six-in-one vaccine for children offers more comprehensive protection. As the number of injections for the baby is reduced, it also lessens the pain and discomfort associated with injections. At the same time, it lowers the risk of cross-infection from visiting clinics and going out.

Dr. Chan Yan-wing stated that when selecting suitable vaccines for young children, consideration can be given to individual needs, financial ability, and the number of vaccinations. If parents have any concerns, they can consult their paediatrician.Baby vaccinations.

Source: Oh!
