However, Hong Kong is currently in the peak flu season, and the number of flu cases seeking medical attention has recently increased. How should parents respond? What is influenza A? What are the symptoms of influenza A in children? Should children be vaccinated against the flu annually? Are there any side effects to the flu vaccine? Dr. Tsui Tsz Kwan, a paediatrician, answers all these questions for us.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the difference between influenza and type A influenza?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seasonal influenza (flu) is an acute respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. Influenza A is one type of influenza virus. There are three types of seasonal influenza viruses that infect humans: types A, B, and C. In Hong Kong, types A and B are more common. Hong Kong experiences two peaks of seasonal influenza, one from January to March\/April and another in July and August. The main influenza season in Hong Kong is winter. The summer influenza season generally lasts for a shorter period and the level of influenza activity is milder compared to the winter season.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the symptoms of influenza A?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The symptoms of influenza A and influenza B are very similar, making it difficult to distinguish between them based on symptoms alone. Symptoms can include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle aches, fatigue, and headache; vomiting and diarrhoea may also occur. The cough may persist for a longer period, but fever and other symptoms generally subside on their own within five to seven days.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Children with influenza A can experience severe symptoms such as high fever, difficulty breathing, chest pain, dehydration, and neurological changes.<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children have lower immunity and their conditions may be more severe. They might develop complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia, or even encephalitis\/encephalopathy, myocarditis or pericarditis, with the most severe cases potentially leading to death.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If children are infected with multiple pathogens at the same time, their symptoms may be more severe. For example, patients who have influenza and COVID-19 simultaneously are more likely to develop serious complications and die.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Influenza A can be treated with antiviral medications.<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Get plenty of rest and drink lots of water.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 If flu-like symptoms appear, you should not go to work or school. If symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical attention immediately.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 The doctor may prescribe antiviral medication depending on the child's condition to alleviate symptoms and shorten the duration of the illness.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are flu medications suitable for children?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In suitable cases, doctors may prescribe antiviral medication to alleviate symptoms and shorten the duration of illness. The effect is more pronounced if taken within 48 hours of symptom onset.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is the flu jab suitable for children?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All individuals aged six months and over should receive the flu jab, except for those with known contraindications, to protect their personal health. Both types of vaccine are very safe and effective.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inactivated influenza vaccine: In addition to pain and redness at the injection site, there are generally no other side effects. Some people may experience symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, and fatigue within 6 to 12 hours after vaccination. These symptoms usually subside within two days.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common side effects of the live attenuated influenza vaccine include a blocked or runny nose (for all ages), fever (for children), and a sore throat (for adults). It is recommended to get vaccinated every year because the immunity built up after vaccination in the previous season decreases over time and may drop to a level where it provides no protection in the following season. Additionally, as the prevalent strains of seasonal influenza viruses can change from time to time, the strains in the flu vaccine are updated annually based on the circulating strains to enhance protection. Therefore, for adequate and effective protection, children and their family members should receive the seasonal flu vaccine every year.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6 Tips to Prevent Flu Infection<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is recommended to get the seasonal flu vaccine, as it can safely and effectively prevent seasonal flu and its complications.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. Maintain good personal and environmental hygiene. Wash your hands frequently and wear a surgical mask when necessary.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3. Avoid crowded places.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4. If you develop symptoms of a respiratory infection, wear a surgical mask and seek medical advice from a doctor as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">5. To enhance children's immunity, the following principles are essential: maintain a balanced diet, engage in regular exercise, get adequate rest, avoid excessive stress, do not smoke, and avoid drinking alcohol.
