RSV respiratory syncytial virus, 8 major symptoms + 4 prevention methods. Children's health.

As the pandemic eases, children who haven't been exposed to other viruses for a long time seem to be paying back their 'immunity debt'. Apart from COVID-19, RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is also a common respiratory virus which, in addition to fever and cough, can even cause bronchitis and asthma.Dr. Lam Ka-yi, Paediatric Specialisthas shared the common symptoms and prevention methods for Respiratory Syncytial Virus, parents must not take it lightly.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus

Respiratory syncytial virus is a single-stranded ribonucleic acid virus. Respiratory syncytial virus infections can cause respiratory diseases such as tracheitis, pneumonia, and otitis media.

Common symptoms of Respiratory Syncytial Virus

Patients may experience fever and other symptoms such as a runny nose, cough, headache, loss of appetite, body aches or weakness, and sometimes middle ear infections. Young children are at higher risk for bronchitis and may show wheezing symptoms. This infection usually clears up within approximately 1-2 weeks. Most patients have mild symptoms that can be relieved with supportive care; however, if more severe symptoms such as wheezing occur, medical attention should be sought immediately.

The main cause of bronchitis in infants under one year old

This virus is the most common cause of bronchitis and pneumonia in infants under one year old. Premature babies, and children with congenital respiratory diseases or heart conditions, are more likely to develop complications or severe infections. It is rumoured that RSV is more dangerous for children than COVID-19. Dr. Lam Ka-yi stated that both the coronavirus and the RSV virus can lead to serious complications such as bronchitis and pneumonia. Neither virus should be underestimated.

Respiratory syncytial virus transmission routes

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) can be transmitted through direct contact with a patient's secretions, via droplets, or indirectly through contaminated hands, utensils, or objects that have recently come into contact with a patient's nasal or pharyngeal secretions. Even though the home is frequently cleaned and disinfected, children and family members still go out, for example, to school, which means there is still a chance of contracting RSV through contact. However, there is currently no vaccine available to prevent Respiratory Syncytial Virus infection.

4 Ways to Prevent Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection

1. Maintain good personal hygiene, keeping your hands clean frequently, especially before touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.

2. When symptoms of a respiratory infection appear, wear a surgical mask. Maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and get sufficient rest.

3. Patients should avoid contact with children, the elderly, or those with weakened immune systems.

4. Maintain good environmental hygiene, regularly use household bleach diluted 1:99 to clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces such as furniture, toys and shared objects. Reduce the use of public play facilities during peak periods.

The article copyright is owned by New Media Group.
