Bifidobacterium is a probiotic species that helps infants build good immunity and maintain gut health. The research team believes that the lack of contact with the mother's birth canal during birth may be the reason for this situation in infants born via caesarean section.

Researchers at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University collected faecal samples from 70 newborns within two weeks of birth for their study. They found that faecal samples from babies born via Caesarean section showed almost no Bifidobacterium. In contrast, Bifidobacterium was found in all 37 faecal samples collected from babies born vaginally and breastfed. Other overseas studies have also found that providing additional probiotic supplements to babies born via Caesarean section can help restore their probiotic levels in the gut.

Dr. Tsui Chi-kwan, a paediatric specialist, stated that the first few months after a baby's birth are a crucial period for establishing a strong immune system. A lack of gut probiotics, including Bifidobacterium, can potentially affect an infant's ability to develop good immunity. It is therefore recommended to supplement with the necessary probiotics at an early stage, which is very important for a baby's healthy growth. She also noted that breastfeeding is best for an infant's health.

Dr Chiu Ka-ki, from the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, stated that as many as 38% of babies in Hong Kong are born via Caesarean section. Research has found that the number of beneficial microorganisms in the intestines of babies born by C-section is significantly lower than that of babies born vaginally. In fact, studies in Singapore and Thailand have yielded similar findings, highlighting the need for special attention to the development of early gut microbiota composition in Asian babies born by C-section.

Media Link: <a
